Today we received 2 calls to meet with Bay Area venture capitalists. We’re flying down during the first week of September to have a few meetings. This is a really great opportunity for us to clarify our thinking even more abour our business. We get so caught up in the day to day aspects of what we’re doing that we often aren’t forced to articulate our business in terms of digestible bullet points. For now, I get to stop thinking about how to minimize resize errors on 15,000 pixel wide TIFF files that someone is trying to upload and I get to focus on the stuff that matters. I guess every business, at some point, needs that obligatory PPT deck whether you’re raising money or not. You’re either pitching to investors, pitching to customers or pitching to partners.
What do we do?
Who are we?
What is the basic proposition?
What is the market size?
What are the market trends?
How will you market it?
What return on marketing do you expect?
What do you require to do this?
What are the challenges and what is the competitive landscape?
How does this wind up being a great investment?
I like these kinds of exercises. I think it’s important to be super crisp on this stuff. The meetings should be interesting.
My wife and I have been working on a project, to onclude a complete Business Plan and other required documentation for a start-up company. We have been talking to the local Development Department, off and on for over 3 years. I gave them a copy of our Business Plan and they were impressed, but evidently not impressed enough to help. They did want me to release my Business Plan for copying. Come to find out one of the people is a Professor at Night School in a local Community College and wanted to use it to teach his class how a Business Plan should be structured and written. I did not tell him it took me two years to do it. Anyway, last year we finally got fed up with trying to get funding and just stopped trying to find funding. Last Feb 4, 2007 we received an email from one of the largest VC Groups in the world of Finance. I think I read they were like the 9th largest in the world.
Anyway, we meet with them the middle of March and I have been looking for some help to touch up my presentation. Hard stuff to find. We are a real start-up. We had our own company for about 5 years and took it from $0 to $1.2M in just 3 years. We closed it due to my health and my wife not being twins could not get everything done. We tried hiring managers, but in the Construction industry, Good ones are hard to find. We were not losing money, but we were not making any either. So we felt it best to close it on our own.
